VETERAN'S MENTAL HEALTH CARE

Are veterans at risk for suicide?

Did you know that veterans are more likely to commit suicide than regular American citizens and female veterans are at higher risk of committing suicide? Over the past few years, the rate of veteran suicide has increased by 50%. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been studying this issue and trying to find a solution. Although the efforts taken by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has shown some improvement in suicide prevention amongst the older veteran population, implementation of more than just the government programs already available is necessary. By implementing more programs, the rate of veteran suicide will hopefully decrease. One solution could be providing education on gun safety and improving gun control, given that veterans own more guns compared to the normal population. If you know a veteran who is struggling with their mental health, reach out to them and offer support or information about the available resources such as the crisis line or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.
